The Crust Characters Characters — Wiki & Guide

The Crust doesn't have a traditional NPC compendium — its "characters" are two groups: the colonists you hire (a procedurally generated workforce with professions, skills and traits) and a small story cast anchored by mission control dialogue. Here's what the sources document about both.
Your colonists: the real roster
Every colonist is generated with a profile you manage like a resource — the game's own line: "People are your most valuable resource."
| Layer | What the sources show | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Professions | Hireable specialties in the applicant pool | Engineers, medics, cooks, botanists, scientists |
| Skills | What they're actually good at alongside their job | "He's a medic specifically, but also very capable of science and some botany" |
| Traits | Personality modifiers with mechanical effects | Diplomat, adaptive, bar regular, athlete, hacker |
| Needs | Health, mood, comfort, food, rest | Eating at a table, entertainment, medbay coverage |
Traits have teeth: a mid-game event asks you to send someone with the diplomat trait to mediate a dispute, and players report hacker-trait colonists offering a chance to blunt faction sabotage. Workplace assignment drives output — one documented Components Factory jumped from 20% to 161% efficiency once staffed, and scientists in labs generate research that drops when they're tired or unhappy.
The hiring pool widens with your global faction reputation — "a diverse pool of scientists with varied traits" is the stated reward for playing contracts well. For the management layer (wages, needs, the worth-it debate), see the colonist guide.
The story cast
The campaign's named presences in our sources:
- Alice — the voice of mission control in the launch trailer ("Alice to MT Logistics, grant us landing permission") and the campaign's most prominent character. She's also the most controversial: several 1.0 Steam reviews single out her "condescending voice lines" as the game's worst writing.
- MT Logistics — the orbital traffic control on the other end of that radio exchange, likely representing the logistics corporation that runs your supply line.
- The factions' personas — Earth-side entities like Xpace, the Arabian Concern of Infrastructure Logistics and Malikite Heavy Engineering appear as contract-givers with distinct flavors (see factions & trade).
The Kickstarter pitches "a cast of characters to guide you through the darkness" — our sources don't document a full character list with bios, so treat the above as the confirmed named presences rather than the complete cast.
Quick answers
- Can you name colonists? The Kickstarter backer perks included "one of the colonists will be named after the player" — beyond that, naming isn't documented in our materials.
- Do characters have story arcs? The campaign has narrative events with choices; the community's documented examples are event chains (a shadowy group's sabotage, a diplomatic mediation) rather than companion-style arcs.
- Who is Alice? The mission-control voice of the campaign — prominent, and divisive among reviewers.
