The Crust the Crust Game Recipes — Wiki & Guide
the Crust Game Recipes explained: Colonist food recipes and canteen planning. Facts sourced from official pages, wiki and community discussions.
"Recipes" in The Crust covers two systems: the meal production that keeps colonists alive (ice → water/oxygen, farms → kitchen), and the gas-based alternative recipes for production buildings (methane, argon, neon). Both are answered in the game's own forum — including directly by a developer.
The colonist food chain
Food arrives surprisingly late: as Pravus discovered in his 1.0 run, "you can't really bring any colonists until you get pretty far down" the Social research tree, because life support is a prerequisite package:
| Step | Building (research) | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ice Extractor → Ice Melter | Melts lunar ice into water; the melter builds into the side of your hab |
| 2 | Electrolysis Plant | Splits water into oxygen |
| 3 | Ventilators (built into walls) | Without them, "whatever oxygen I produce stays in this hallway and never goes into the bedroom — and people will die" |
| 4 | Hydroponic Farm (plus Large Hydroponic Farm / Mushroom Farm later) | Grows crops for meals |
| 5 | Automated Kitchen | Cooks meals from farm output |
| 6 | Tables and a proper room | Colonists need somewhere to eat — a colonist who ate standing got food but "your comfort rating is down to zero" |
Skipping the chain is expensive: buying emergency food rations cost one creator 626 credits per meal during his run — his conclusion was to grow your own as soon as the research line allows. The Kickstarter fact sheet frames the same loop as "converting ice into oxygen and water" and building "kitchens for food preparation" among colonist facilities.
Gas recipes: methane, argon, neon
Surface gas extractors tap three gases, and each feeds alternative production recipes. A player thread on exactly this got a developer reply (IRAKLE, March 2026):
- Researching gas recipes unlocks alternative recipes in the Assembly and Constructor — until then the recipes are visible but inactive.
- Methane is the fuel gas. You don't research it: once the Fuel Factory is up, you choose methane or ice, plus aluminum, to produce fuel (forum veteran Almasty's summary: "Methane is in your fuel factory").
- Argon and neon gate the alternative recipes in Assembly/Constructor — one player did the argon and neon researches expecting new methane uses and found none, which is expected behavior.
- Neon balance is a known sore spot: a 1.0 reviewer listed "neon is still stifling" among his few complaints after the recipe rebalance.
Where to find gases (and what to do when RNG hates you)
- Gas deposits spawn at your main base randomly — one player consistently found all three near his base, then started a new game and got "3× methane mines" and no argon at all.
- Some players report neon tied to outposts, and hunting specific gases can push you toward rail-gun vehicles and anomaly expeditions.
- The reliable fallback: a repair-mission POI where fixing an abandoned base earns "a gas of your choice" — the RNG-unlucky player above confirmed using exactly that to top up argon.
Practical recipe priorities
- Social research through the kitchen line before hiring anyone — imported meals are a credit incinerator.
- One hydroponic farm feeds a starter crew; add the mushroom farm when comfort matters.
- Research argon alternatives early if your map rolls argon; skip neon hunting until the outposts economy exists.
- Methane fuel only beats ice fuel when your map actually rolls methane — check your gas extractors before committing the Fuel Factory's recipe slot.
